The skin tactile and beautifully finished, soft plastics and substantial. Lexus claims a price advantage over the BMW 1-series and Audi A3 Sportback after you adjust the equipment - which does not include the atmosphere of wealth and quality that comes as standard.

Lexus generosity is not limited, though. Sat-nav and DAB radio in the mid-spec car extras and, as it comes bundled with a pre-crash safety system, adaptive cruise control is an expensive option even on the top-spec models.

If you have a model with sat-nav is installed, you will be lucky enough to find the Lexus Remote Touch multi-function control. It should operate like a computer mouse, but fiddly to use and require too many commands to perform even the simplest of functions. BMW iDrive is a million times easier to use.

The most enjoyable aspects of Toyota's Hybrid Synergy Drive is not economic but the lack of relaxed noise at low speeds. In short, the Lexus CT200h is one serious car quiet. Using electric power alone, there are almost no whine of the electric motor, while road and wind interference is negligible, owned cabin insulation commendable.

The CT200h can be pretty responsive, though. Select Sport mode and you get an extra boost from the electric motor, as well as a sharper throttle response. That done, you will find Lexus have enough impetus to overtake relaxed under 70mph, there is no charge in its battery.

The biggest problem with the car's performance nothing short of electricity directly. It's more that it was delivered in a way that makes you feel good just vague machine control, and that makes you work doubly hard to earn and maintain the speed.
